The City’s enforcement departments made 401 arrests this past week, among them three men suspected of kidnapping a woman.

Law Enforcement auxiliary officers on patrol in Rondebosch on Friday, 10 March 2023, pulled over a vehicle after several reports of the driver committing a number of traffic offences.

The officers picked up on tension between the occupants and when they interviewed the female occupant, she told them she had been kidnapped earlier in Muizenberg and had been forced to accompany them as they attempted to withdraw funds from her bank account.

The suspects were arrested for kidnapping and theft.

‘The victim was incredibly grateful to the officers for intervening when they did, but this could have had a very different outcome. The City again extends its offer of assistance to the South African Police Service in tackling the scourge of kidnapping and extortion. Rather than constantly trying to challenge our legal rights and delaying the cooperation, we request the National Minister and National Commissioner to honour their commitment and immediately establish an effective Kidnapping and Extortion Unit in Cape Town, before any further loss of life occurs,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

During the past week, the City’s Law Enforcement Department officers made 283 arrests.

Of these, officers attached to the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) arrested a man who pointed his firearm at the officers.  

Officers were on patrol in Govan Mbeki Avenue on Saturday evening, 11 March 2023, when they heard gun shots in the vicinity of Luzuko Drive. 

As they turned into the road, officers saw a White VW Polo trying to speed off, but they managed to stop the vehicle. 

The driver pointed a firearm at the two officers, and they soon realised he was inebriated as he was rude, hurling insults and didn't want to hand over the firearm.

More officers arrived to subdue the driver and confiscate his firearm, a .38 Special revolver. 

The driver was arrested and taken to Philippi East SAPS, while his two passengers were released.

The PECC received 2 039 calls over the past weekend.

Of these, 741 were calls for medical assistance and 110 were to report incidents of violent assault.

The previous weekend, 172 calls were logged reporting assault.

‘The last and first weekends of a month continue to be some of the busiest for our officers as payday brings increased revelry, recklessness and sadly, lawlessness. This accounts for the high figures, and although assault figures are down two weeks into the new month, it is still 110 incidents too many,’ said Alderman Smith. 

A total of 20 956 speeding offences were recorded, and 26 348 fines were issued for various traffic violations, a total of 309 public transport vehicles were impounded and 1 517 warrants of arrest were executed.

Officers made 57 arrests for the following offences: 

Officers arrested 61 suspects and issued 3 903 fines.

On Sunday, 12 March 2023, Metro Police Special Operations Unit acted on information of two premises storing drugs in the area. 

The officers recovered various quantities of drugs including:

A man and a woman, aged 36 and 44 were arrested for the possession of drugs, and detained at Philippi SAPS.
